Two Mothers, Mothers with Children, On the Plantation, painting by Ellis Wilson
Two Mothers, Mothers with Children, On the Plantation, by Ellis Wilson, c.1946

Ellis Wilson, born in Kentucky in 1899, turned scenes of common life into beautiful art. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and later worked in Harlem. His journey to Haiti in 1952 inspired many of his great paintings. Although Wilson's art is greatly appreciated now, he was not commercially successful during his lifetime, and died in poverty in 1977. His work is now displayed in the Smithsonian Museum's National Gallery of Art.
