This presentation will include a variety of information about how mental health concerns manifest, how to best support someone going through mental health concerns, and specific barriers the Latino/a/x population faces in higher education. It will also include valuable resources in the community and in surrounding areas to help support those experiencing mental health concerns. Speaker Bio: Alma Lazaro is a bilingual limited license social worker under supervision towards her full clinical license. Alma is working towards specializing in treating generalized anxiety disorder (worry), health anxiety, trauma, sexual assault, domestic violence, and caregiver support. Alma works with adolescents and adults. She provides telehealth and in-person counseling at Oak Heart Center for Counseling at the Sycamore, IL location.

In this session Deyci Ramirez will share practical strategies and insights on creating supportive and inclusive spaces for Latino/a/x students. Drawing from her personal and professional experiences, she will explore the unique challenges faced by this growing population and discuss how faculty can effectively engage and empower students. This session aims to equip educators with tools to enhance their cultural competence and create a more inclusive learning environment.
Speaker Bio: Deyci Ramirez is a dedicated educator and advocate for equity in higher education. She holds a Master of Science in Education in Counseling, Adult and Higher Education from Northern Illinois University (NIU) and is completing her PhD in Educational Administration and Foundations with an emphasis on Leadership, Equity, and Inquiry at Illinois State University (ISU). As the current Bilingual/Bicultural Counselor for the CHANCE program at NIU, Deyci supports diverse student populations, particularly Latino/a/x students. With extensive experience in student affairs, she also serves as President of the Board of Education for District 428 in DeKalb, IL, and teaches courses on social justice and leadership.

Learn how to create visually interesting and accessible pages of course content with Brightspace templates! We’ll explore the Brightspace Learning Center Resources and the many free activities, courses, templates, and content items that are available for their use. We’ll also explore the Learning Center Resources including many free courses that model innovative teaching strategies like branching scenarios, gamification, and escape rooms available for you to review and borrow from.
