Regular and substantive interaction (RSI) in online learning refers to the planned, meaningful, and frequent communication between instructors and students. It's a key element of online course design and delivery, ensuring that students are engaged in the learning process and receiving the support they need.
Instructor-Led Interaction
Instructors should proactively start and guide various interactions with students throughout the semester. These interactions should not be optional or left to the discretion of individual learners and should be related to the course content.
Examples of Regular, Substantive, and Predictable Instructor-Initiated Interactions
• Regularly scheduled synchronous instructional sessions where the instructor provides direct instruction
• Regularly scheduled office hours where the instructor responds to questions related to the coursework.
• Providing audio, video or text instructor feedback on assignments.
• Providing instructor-led course-related discussion forums where students respond directly via audio, video or text.
• Having a dedicated “Ask the Instructor” discussion board where the instructor can respond to course-related questions.
• Providing individualized, detailed feedback on student assignments.
The U.S. Department of Education mandates that all online courses eligible for Title IV funds (federal financial aid) must incorporate regular and substantive interaction between students and instructors. Regular and substantive interaction (RSI) is a critical component that differentiates distance education from correspondence education, and it is a key factor in determining students' eligibility to utilize federal financial aid funds.
